Day 5 and 6: 0 + 19,2 km (+1200m uphill and 740m. downhill)
At the town of Budva I take a zero. It’s pretty touristic out here. However, tourist season hasn’t started yet so it is still quiet out here. What’s to say about a zero? Shower, laundry, eating seafood and buying resupplies. At the local market I buy dried mushrooms and raspberries, fresh cheese and dried sausage. I also buy a lighter. No more soaked food! Those kinds of things.
In the morning I take the first bus leaving Budva. As a leave the bus at Brajići the guy handing me my backpack asks if I’m out for a hike. ‘Yes, to Herceg Novi’, I answer. ‘Ni normal!’ He replies.
Hiking to NP Lovćen
This trail is not often hiked and as to be expected the trail isn’t always marked or clear. It’s doable, though. First, there’s the hike out of the village (including weeds and other prickly plants). After this a forest: vague markings and climbing over fallen down trees. At a spot where forestry is going on, I look for a cistern, which I cannot find. The next cistern is a three hour (or so) walk farther, therefore I am a bit annoyed I can’t find this one.
Shortly after returning to the trail I bump into the cistern. Oh yeah! The Oh yeah! turns into a Mwah as I see a dead bird floating in the water. After filtering and adding lemonade powder the water tastes ehm… interesting. Well, interesting tasting water is better than no water, isn’t it?
Soon after the cistern both the trail and the markers disappear. The just-follow-the-line-on-the-GPS-approach gets me to the settlement of Majtori. Meanwhile the sky gets filled with clouds, both at the coast and the inn land. It’s also makes rumbling sounds.
Just shy of Majtori the markings are back. And how! Bright reds and shining whites everywhere. As I arrive at the cistern the sun comes out for a bit.
While filtering the water I dry my feet, socks and trailrunners. The next part of the trail is supposed to offer stunning views. I get treated to skies full of clouds.
An unpaved road marks National Park Lovćen. It’s a fast and uncomplicated hike over this red carpet into the heart of the park. I check in at hotel Monte Rosa, staying here saves me the weight of carrying tonight’s dinner and tomorrow’s breakfast.
